Pool Leak Detection in Moreleta Park — When the Pool Isn’t the Problem
The most common wrong-diagnosis we correct on a Moreleta Park pool call is this: the pool is losing water, so the pool has a leak. In estate-scale Moreleta properties with landscaped grounds, an auto-fill line running underground from the property mains to the pool skimmer, and a garden irrigation loop tapped into the same section, the pool losing water is often actually the property's mains losing water — and the pool is just the visible symptom because the auto-fill is topping up whatever's evaporating plus whatever's being lost upstream.
On our first Moreleta pool callout to an estate stand where the pool "loses two centimetres a day", we now check the mains before we check the shell. Because on many of those calls, the shell holds pressure fine — the loss is on the mains between the estate meter and the auto-fill valve, and the auto-fill is compensating so consistently that the client didn't notice a bill spike until well after the pool "started" leaking.
How we isolate the pool from the mains
The diagnostic sequence on a Moreleta estate pool starts by uncoupling the pool from the mains altogether. We close the auto-fill isolator (usually at the skimmer or at a dedicated valve in the pump chamber), leave the pool at its current level, and monitor the pool for 24 hours if the client can wait, or for the duration of the session if they can't. Then we run the standard pressure inspection on the three pool circuits.
If the pool level held stable overnight with the auto-fill closed, the pool itself is fine and the loss is upstream. If the pool level dropped even with auto-fill closed, the pool has a leak in the pool proper and we proceed with the standard three-circuit pressure work. Either diagnosis is included in the R2,150 flat rate.
What actually causes Moreleta pool losses
Where the loss is upstream (on the mains-to-auto-fill line), the failure is almost always at an HDPE ferrule joint on the buried service run. We covered the mechanism on our water leak detection page for the suburb — the reactive Rietvlei clay flexes long HDPE runs over decades and eventually loosens a ferrule joint. On pool-adjacent runs the problem is worse because the plumbing is often threaded through irrigation zones, sprinkler heads, and landscape features that hide the leak from surface visibility.
Where the loss is in the pool itself, the pattern shifts. Newer estate pools (2000s and 2010s builds) have their leaks concentrated at fitting-installation points: skimmer weir seals on retiled pools, return-jet O-rings on the deep-end wall where hydrostatic pressure is highest, and light-conduit through-fittings on the shell where the conduit passes into the plant chamber. Older Moreleta pools (late 1980s and early 1990s builds) more commonly show bond-beam mastic separation and coping-stone mortar failures.
The R2,150 session — accommodating both diagnostics
The flat rate covers the full session regardless of which side of the auto-fill the leak sits on. Where the diagnostic identifies an upstream mains leak, we mark the pinpoint on the estate service run and produce a report the managing agent can act on. Where the leak is in the pool, we mark the point on the shell or the fitting and hand over a repair quote. On rare occasions we find both — a small pool leak plus a larger upstream mains loss — and the report documents each separately.
Pricing, guarantee, terms
R2,150 flat for the single-pump session. Photographic report emailed within two business days with numbered findings, GPS pinpoint where applicable, and a repair quote for whatever we found. On confirmed leaks — pressure test that fails or measurable level loss with the auto-fill closed — that we cannot locate with our full detection kit, you receive a full refund under the No Find, No Fee guarantee. Please read the pool leak detection service terms before your appointment.
Prep — auto-fill and estate-specific
- Water level filled to halfway past the skimmer opening at time of booking. Where the auto-fill is running continuously to maintain that level, note this at booking — it's the primary indicator that the loss may be upstream of the pool.
- Water clear enough that we can see the pool floor from the deck.
- Pump and multiport valve functional.
- If the property is on an estate, share the estate name, gate reference, and vehicle-registration instructions at booking.
- Please identify the auto-fill isolator ahead of the appointment. On many Moreleta estate pools this is inside a plant chamber next to the pool or under the skimmer lid.
- Enclose dogs.
Frequently asked questions — Moreleta Park
We've been topping up the pool manually for months because the auto-fill valve failed. Does that change the diagnostic?
No — if anything it simplifies the diagnostic. With the auto-fill non-functional, any observed pool loss is a pool-side loss (because the pool isn't being replenished from the mains). If your pool is dropping at a measurable rate with the auto-fill off, book the standard session and we proceed straight to the pressure work. The mains-side check we described above only applies where the auto-fill is compensating.
Our estate's landscape service runs an irrigation system that shares plumbing with the pool auto-fill. Can that mask the leak?
Yes, this is a common Moreleta scenario. Shared irrigation/auto-fill loops can hide the direction of the leak because the irrigation is drawing water at the same time the pool is being filled. We ask that the irrigation controller be switched off for the full inspection window. If the property has a smart-controller with random scheduling, please share the controller's manufacturer/model at booking so we can confirm the correct isolation method.
The estate managing agent handles all plumbing repairs — is the report addressed to us or to them?
Both, if you'd like. The primary email goes to the client who placed the booking. Where the leak is on the estate reticulation side (upstream of the property boundary), the managing agent needs the report to authorise the repair, so we CC them on request. Where the leak is inside the property, the report is yours and it's your call whether to share it.
Our pool tiles have started showing calcium scaling around the waterline. Can you tell if it's related to a leak?
Not directly. Waterline scaling is usually a chemistry issue rather than a leak issue — hard borehole top-up water, low pool pH, or a stalled calcium hardness reading. That said, chronic top-up from a leaking pool accelerates scaling because you're introducing more mineral load per unit time. Fixing the leak often reduces the scaling rate secondarily. We flag the scaling in the report if it's visible during the session, but we don't quote to remove it — that's a pool cleaner's scope.
No Find, No Fee
